In the week since he officially joined the race conservative media outlets have been trying to define Walz as a left-wing lunatic. However, the reality is that Walz is a moderate Democrat that supports social programs that resonate with voters across the political spectrum.
After serving 24 years in the National Guard, including a deployment overseas, Walz felt a deep sense of duty to speak out against policies he believed were misguided. His opposition to the Iraq War was a driving force behind his decision to run for Congress in 2006, as he sought to bring a soldier's perspective and a commitment to responsible governance to Washington. Running in a Republican-leaning district, Walz campaigned on a platform of pragmatic solutions and strong national security, ultimately defeating his opponent in a significant victory. Like many, the first time that I heard of Walz was when he attained national attention for signing a bill that established universal school meals in all schools in Minnesota, a program that I strongly support for every state.
