What Tim Walz Brings to the Presidential Race
The Governor Joining Kamala Harris in 2024
Governor Tim Walz of Minnesota has hit the ground running, after Vice President Kamala Harris announced that she had selected him to be her running mate. In the week since he officially joined the race conservative media outlets have been trying to define Walz as a left-wing lunatic. However, the reality is that Walz is a moderate Democrat that supports social programs that resonate with voters across the political spectrum.
After serving 24 years in the National Guard, including a deployment overseas, Walz felt a deep sense of duty to speak out against policies he believed were misguided. His opposition to the Iraq War was a driving force behind his decision to run for Congress in 2006, as he sought to bring a soldier's perspective and a commitment to responsible governance to Washington. Running in a Republican-leaning district, Walz campaigned on a platform of pragmatic solutions and strong national security, ultimately defeating his opponent in a significant victory. In 2018, he transitioned to state leadership by running for governor of Minnesota, where he successfully won re-election in 2022, continuing his work to build a more just and equitable society.
Like many, the first time that I heard of Walz was when he attained national attention for signing a bill that established universal school meals in all schools in Minnesota, a program that I strongly support for every state.
Governor Walz brings a unique perspective to the ticket, having spent years as a high school social studies teacher and football coach, where he shaped young minds and instilled values of teamwork, discipline, and civic responsibility. This experience on the front lines of education gave him firsthand insight into the challenges facing students, teachers, and families. It also fueled his passion for creating policies that support educational equity and empower the next generation. Walz's time in the classroom and on the football field taught him the importance of perseverance, collaboration, and leadership—qualities that have become hallmarks of his political career.
Governor Tim Walz's dedication to education, healthcare, and economic equity has been a cornerstone of his political career. During his time in Congress, Walz was voted for the Affordable Care Act, recognizing the importance of expanding healthcare access to millions of Americans. His commitment to veterans' issues was equally unwavering, as he championed legislation to improve healthcare, benefits, and employment opportunities for those who have served our country. As governor, he has continued this work by prioritizing education funding, pushing for universal school meals, and advocating for policies that ensure all Minnesotans have the opportunity to thrive economically. Walz's track record demonstrates his deep understanding of the challenges facing working families and his determination to create a more equitable society.
I couldn’t be more excited to have Walz join VP Harris on the ticket. By choosing Walz, Harris is reassuring voters of her commitment to working families, public service, and a more prosperous future. Together, they represent a team that is ready to lead with compassion, experience, and a clear-eyed vision for America’s future.
