The Looming Government Shutdown
The GOP’s brinkmanship isn’t about governing—it’s about forcing Democrats to capitulate.
Today marks the final day of the U.S. government’s fiscal year, which means that if Congress doesn’t pass a budget or temporary funding measure before midnight, the federal government will cease all non-essential spending and services.
Republicans are refusing to negotiate with Democrats for the 7-votes they need in order to overcome a filibuster in the Senate, and pass a bill. Democrats are seeking to reinstate Affordable Care Act subsidies, to prevent 4 million Americans from losing their coverage, and millions more who will see their premiums rise dramatically.
At the moment, it appears that Congressional Republicans are counting on Senate Democrats to cave at the last minute—either by supporting a continuation of the current Republican budget or by accepting a shutdown that would grant the executive branch expanded authority to fund or defund agencies and lay off employees who don’t align with the administration’s priorities.
A shutdown would not just be a chaotic political stalemate in Washington—it would have immediate consequences for millions of Americans. Hundreds of thousands of federal workers could be furloughed or forced to work without pay, while critical services like food assistance, housing support, and small business loans would face delays or disruptions. Each day of inaction risks slowing economic growth, straining household budgets, and deepening public distrust in government’s ability to meet even its most basic obligations.
This fight isn’t just about budget priorities—it’s about whether government can meet its most basic obligations. A shutdown would punish workers, families, and communities far more than politicians. However, caving to Trump and the GOP’s demands continues a bad precedent of Democratic capitulation. Democrats want a fight, but it needs to be a winnable fight.
If Congress fails to act, the real cost will be measured in missed paychecks, delayed services, and a deeper erosion of public trust—and Republicans will be entirely responsible.
